Have you been thinking of raising bees in your backyard? Honeybees are assets to the backyard gardener by pollinating fruit trees, berries, fruiting vegetables and other garden plants and they provide a valuable by-product to boot! Now is the time to prepare for starting hives in the spring. This introductory course will cover the basic fundamentals of beekeeping, including equipment, parts of the hive, location and codes of the apiary, feeding and treating bees, and seasonal management. Students will have the option to purchase a Washington State Beekeeper’s Association Apprentice Program manual for $10. The WSBA manual is a simple and extremely useful resource for beginning beekeepers and you have the option to take a test from the booklet and get certified as an apprentice beekeeper.
This lecture-based class will be taught by experienced beekeeper Corky Luster. Corky keeps bees in Ballard, is on the Board of Puget Sound Beekeepers, and mentors several novice backyard beekeepers around Seattle. Corky is a certified journeyman beekeeper with the WSBA and owner of the Ballard Bee company.
Cost: $18 for Tilth members, $25 non-members. Advance registration and payment is required.
