  • Red, black and GREEN: a blues
    WHO: The Next Fifty, in partnership with Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas and Seattle Art Museum
    WHAT: Marc Bamuthi Joseph's newest multi-disciplinary project layers poetic text, dance, music and film to jumpstart a conversation about environmental racism, social ecology and collective responsibility in the climate change era. Designed as a performance as well as an interactive on-stage installation by visual artist Theaster Gates, Joseph is joined by an ensemble cast directed by Cornerstone Theater's Michael John Garcés, red, black and GREEN: a blues has been developed during a three-year community-based civic and creative process and strives to unite communities around a broader definition of sustainable living.  The set design, by Theaster Gates is interactive, allowing audiences to actually be a part of the event. It will truly be amazing!

  • New Exhibit at the Burke Museum – Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
    WHO: Burke Museum of Natural History & Culture
    WHAT: Hungry Planet seeks to encourage discussion on how people, locally and globally, incorporate food into their lives and cultures. The exhibit features photographs of families from 10 cultures around the world and is a place to gather and explore the myriad of issues surrounding food – from sustainable agriculture to food sovereignty.  Through collaboration with local tribal members, the Burke Museum is creating Salish Bounty: Traditional Native American Foods of Puget Sound, a supplementary display to Hungry Planet, which documents archaeological and historical research about thousands of years of food traditions in the Puget Sound area.

  • Visit the Seattle Tilth Farm Works stand at the Farmers Market at Virgina Mason Medical Center!
    WHO: Virginia Mason Medical Center
    WHAT: Virginia Mason proudly brings back the Virginia Mason Farmers Market to our campus for patients, employees and the First Hill community.  The market brings together local farmers, artisan vendors and musicians, offering fresh seasonal fruits and produce, artisan cheeses, organic breads and pastries, local honey, duck eggs and other fresh and local items.
    WHEN: Every Friday (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) from June 1 through September.

  • Food Lust 2012 Tickets On Sale!
    WHO: Cascade Harvest Coalition
    WHAT: You're invited to Food Lust 2012, the seventh annual on-farm gala dinner and benefit for Cascade Harvest Coalition.  The evening will begin with wine, cocktails and appetizers to accompany a silent auction, followed by a regionally sourced multi-course meal prepared by local chefs and conclude with a dessert dash and rousing live auction hosted by "The Mouth of the South" JT Haynes.  Also returning to Food Lust this year are musical guests New Forge, with fresh takes and hot licks on barreling bluegrass, Chicago blues, low-down funk and rock grooves.

  • Herbal Medicine Apprenticeship Program with Naturalist/Herbalist Suzanne Jordan
    WHO: Cedar Mountain Herb School
    WHAT: a comprehensive hands-on practical summer apprenticeship program that studies herbal medicine concentrating on wildcrafted plants.  The program provides you with a rock solid foundation of plant knowledge and their applications.  Areas of focus include: botanical identification, materia medica, plant formulas, medicine making, preservation methods, medicine in the herb garden, cultured foods, canning, natural chicken care, herbal lore & ethnobotany, aromatherapy and herbal support for body systems.
    WHEN: Summer 2012: Tuesdays, Jun. 5-Aug. 21 or Saturdays, Jun. 9-Aug. 15, 9 a.m.-5p.m. 100+ hours of study.  Autumn 2012: Tuesdays, Sep. 4-Nov. 20 and Saturdays, Sep. 1-Nov. 17, 10 a.m.-5p.m. 83+ hours of study.

  • Permaculture Design Course at Shambala Farm

We will cover fun and important topics including permaculture design, generative ecology, community building, local economies, organic gardening, herbs and natives, vegetative propagation, animal husbandry, composting and much, much more!   • Farm Bill 101 Interactive Workshop
    WHO: The Northwest Farm Bill Action Group
    WHAT: Farm Bill 101 is designed to educate communities about the upcoming 2012 Farm Bill and how it is connected to the global food system and food sovereignty.  It will spark discussion on how individuals and groups acting as citizen activists can work towards establishing a healthier, sustainable, equitable Farm Bill and food system. Come gain concrete tools for changing the food system!

  • 4th Annual Ballard Edible Garden Tour
    Who: Sustainable Ballard
    What: Be inspired! Check out your neighbors’ gardens!  This walking or biking tour of NE Ballard food gardens provides examples of creative uses of parking strips, containers, raised beds, bee houses, chicken coops, fruit trees & berries and more! Meet the gardeners and ask questions.  The tour includes a dozen gardens to explore within walking distance of Whittier Elementary School.
    When: Saturday June 23, 2012, 10am - 3pm.
    Where: Buy your ticket/map at Whittier Elementary, 1320 NW 75th, on the day of the tour.
    Cost: $10 (kids are free) supports Sustainable Ballard's community projects.

  • SWP Presents FREE Savvy Gardener Classes!
    WHO: The Saving Water Partnership and Cascade Water Alliance
    WHAT: Our free classes are designed to inspire gardeners while sharing practical advice on creating and maintaining healthy, beautiful landscapes that are good for you and the environment.  Topics include food gardening, plants & design, improving soil, lawn & yard care and feature classes such as Designing the Northwest Garden, Plant Marriages Made in Heaven, Mama Mia! Water Saving Ideas from Italy, The Dirt on Dirt and many more!  Classes are taught by local gardening educators from Seattle Tilth and Lake Washington Technical College, published authors, master gardeners, landscape designers and Lowe’s and Home Depot.

  • 2011 Kneading Conference West
    WHO: Kneading Conference
    WHAT: Kneading West is a gathering of home and professional bakers, farmers, millers, researchers, earth oven enthusiasts and anyone interested in handcrafted breads and pastries, locally grown grains, and the movement to restore regional food systems.  Beginning Thursday afternoon and ending Saturday afternoon, the schedule includes hands-on workshops, lectures, and panel discussions with renowned leaders from the agriculture and baking worlds.
    WHEN: September 13-15, 2012

    COST: $300 per person and includes all meals which are made from scratch from local harvests and products to the extent possible

  • Join the Just Garden Project as a Volunteer Mentor!
    WHO: The Just Garden Project
    WHAT: The Just Garden Project is entering its second year providing garden mentors for underserved family and community gardens across King county, and we are looking for volunteer garden mentors to join our team.  We are seeking seasoned gardeners who are interested in sharing their knowledge of growing vegetables with new growers in south King County. The mentor role is about simultaneously expanding the local food system and building gardening knowledge through community involvement.
    WHEN: Throughout the 2012 growing season, approximately 1-2 hours/week
    WHERE: Most gardens are located in South King County
