  • Country Living Expo & Cattlemen’s Winterschool Jan 28th
    WHO: WSU Skagit County Extension
    Presenting 160 classes, unveiling 40 brand new classes, 60 vendor trade show, and a gourmet smoked prime rib lunch or vegetarian dinner. Break you winter doldrums by spending a day at the Expo! Smokin’ Hot Barbecuing, Permaculture Homesteading 101, Beginning – Beef, Sheep, Goat, Poultry, Swine Classes, Smoking Fish, Sausage Making, Grinding Local Grains, Chick Embryology, Dried beans, Flower arranging, Organic Gardening, Fibers, Slug & Snail Control, Chainsaw Maintenance, Poultry Processing, Canning, Hay Selection, Barn Restoration are just a small sampling of our classes. 
    WHEN Saturday, Jan. 28, from 7:30 am to 5 pm
    WHERE: Stanwood High School, 7400 272nd Street N.W. in Stanwood.
    COST: Early registration until Dec. 31, $55 includes lunch. After Dec. 31, $60 per person - the first 200 youth will receive a reduced registration rate of $10.

  • New Exhibit at the Burke Museum – Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
    WHO: Burke Museum of Natural History & Culture
    WHAT: Hungry Planet seeks to encourage discussion on how people, locally and globally, incorporate food into their lives and cultures. The exhibit features photographs of families from 10 cultures around the world and is a place to gather and explore the myriad of issues surrounding food – from sustainable agriculture to food sovereignty.  Through collaboration with local tribal members, the Burke Museum is creating Salish Bounty: Traditional Native American Foods of Puget Sound, a supplementary display to Hungry Planet, which documents archaeological and historical research about thousands of years of food traditions in the Puget Sound area. Current efforts to revitalize these food traditions by tribal members in the region are highlighted.

    WHERE: Located on the UW Campus at 17th Ave NE and NE 45th Street

  • Short Course in Biodynamic Husbandry
    WHO: Henning Sehmsdorf & Barry Lia (S&S Center for Sustainable Agriculture)
    WHAT: This Short Course of four full days will introduce participants to proven biodynamic
    approaches to soil, crop, and animal husbandry through lectures, experiential exercises, hands-on learning, and on-farm activities.  You will learn of scientific research, some of it conducted in our own region, validating the unique biodynamic field spray and compost practices. You will also be introduced to the complementary Goethean way of science, the primary background for the biodynamic approach to ecological farming. You will witness the inherent economic and ecological sustainability of biodynamic food and fiber production.
    WHEN: Fridays, March 11th, 18th, & 25th at WSU Puyallup Research & Extension Center
    And Saturday, April 9th at S&S Homestead Farm, Lopez Island

    WHO: The Food Project engages youth and communities in personal and social change through programs advancing food justice and promoting sustainable agriculture.
    WHAT: The Executive Director will lead an organization with 20 years of history and will provide strategic vision that will remain true to the mission and culture of this highly effective organization.  Ideal candidates will bring at least 7 years of management experience in a complex, multifaceted social change organization and a track record of high-level strategic planning and decision-making. Strong candidates will bring a deep and authentic passion for The Food Project’s work at the intersection of food, youth, and community, exceptional communications and leadership skills, a track record of fundraising success, and a commitment to the organization’s core operating principles.

  • Arboretum & Audubon Collaborating on NW Flower & Garden Show Exhibit!
    WHO: Washington Park Arboretum & Seattle Audubon Society
    WHAT: Entitled “Birdsong,” the display will depict three distinct bird habitats-marshland, woodland edge, and deeper forest.  It will be a teaching tool for any urban gardeners wishing to welcome birds into their own backyards.
