Seattle Tilth is poised to help an unprecedented number of people in the region grow their own organic vegetables and fruits this year, starting with the Edible Plant Sale on May 2nd & 3rd.
All indicators suggest it’s going to be a banner year for food gardening. People across the nation are showing a renewed enthusiasm for growing food at home, from Michelle Obama digging up the White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, to regular features in major print and online media on the topic. Seattle is certainly no exception. With our mild maritime climate, rich soils, and abundant garden resources, Puget Sound region is nearly an ideal place for year-round gardening.
The upcoming Edible Plant Sale is the perfect way to kick-off the garden season for beginning and longtime gardeners. Providing both education and the largest selection of organically and sustainably grown vegetable plants available in the Puget Sound area, this event is unique. Plants are hand-selected by the Seattle Tilth experts to perform well in our Pacific Northwest climate and include over 50 varieties of tomatoes and 20 varieties of peppers, rare and heirloom veggie varieties, an extensive selection of culinary herbs, and edible flowers. We will also be selling compost, potting soil, and the Maritime Northwest Garden Guide, an indispensable regional resource for year-round gardening.
”People want to grow their own food because it gives you a feeling of accomplishment with tangible rewards, like fresh greens for your salad,” explains Executive Director, Andrea Platt Dwyer. “If you learn some gardening basics about what plants need and how to build healthy soil, then you can actually save money in your food budget, too. Plus, you tend to eat better!”
Seattle Tilth’s Edible Plant Sale is more than just a sale. The Tilth experts will also provide their nationally recognized organic gardening education through free gardening presentations, compost demonstrations, children’s activities, a Q & A booth, and classes offered for a fee such as “1,2,3 Grow a Garden” and “Container Veggie Gardening.” To see a complete list of plants that will be available and garden programs offered throughout the year, visit: www.seattletilth.org.
