11:30-12:30 p.m. “Harvest the Rain with a Cistern”

How can you use cisterns in your landscape? It’s easier than you think! Find out how you can harvest rainwater from your roof for use in your garden using a cistern. Cisterns save you money, conserve water, prevent stormwater pollution, and can remedy drainage issues. Keep your garden well watered in the dry summer months using free water! This workshop will cover the basics and benefits of cisterns, the components of a cistern and how they work, how to customize a system for your landscape, and what to do to get started collecting your rain. 1:30-3:00 p.m. “Earthues: Natural Dyes From The Garden”

Instructor: Kathy Hattori – Earthues
Learn how to create natural, non-toxic color from common garden plants and household items. The hands-on fun begins when everyone has the opportunity to re-purpose a cotton t-shirt, tie-dye it in crazy patterns and then dip it into an indigo vat and experience the magic of getting blue from this amazing plant. Please dress in comfortable clothing that you can get dirty. Bring a clean, light-colored 100% cotton t-shirt, a gallon-size plastic bag to hold your wet, dyed t-shirt, and a pair of thin plastic gloves to protect your hands while dipping. Children should be accompanied by an adult. Limit 25 participants.
2:00-4:00 p.m. “Home Canning & Food Preservation”
Wallingford Community Senior Center Kitchen – in the basement of the Good Shepherd Center
Instructor: Jessica Dalley – Master Canner/Food Preservers + Seattle Free School
Jessica is a Master Canner/Food Preserver and in this class she will be teaching about food safety, water bath canning and pressure canning and when you would use either method. Doors will close at 2:05 p.m. and students will not be admitted late, so please arrive a bit early.

2:30-4:00 p.m. “Compost Open House: Compost Your Food & Yard Waste at Home”
Demonstration Garden
Instructors: Lori Conzatti, Val Costa and Brandon Lanich – Master Composter/Soil Builder Volunteers
Seattle Tilth’s Master Composter/Soil Builders will be on hand in the Demonstration Garden to work with you one on one to demystify dirt! Available for everything from hands-on composting education (build a hot compost pile!) to leading you on a tour around the garden while giving special highlight to its many different composting features, the Master Composter/Soil Builders are here to serve you and help make your own composting in the city that much easier.
Ongoing Activities
Activities in the Children’s Garden – make garden crafts, explore the worm bin, paint your face and join the Kids Parade! Meet at 11:30 a.m. for the noon parade.
Herb Crowns – make your own harvest crown at this popular do-it-yourself station and bring your fresh herbs and flowers from home to contribute
Kids Picks Mobile – join PCC and let your kids sample foods that are healthy and tasty foods kids are likely to enjoy
Urban Livestock – meet city chickens, mini dairy goats & honey bees and ask their owners questions about raising these critters in the city
PCC Cooks – these friendly chefs will show you great ideas on how you can cook delicious and nourishing recipes with fresh ingredients
